Ten ways to have fun now lockdown is over!

For the last 18 months we have been subject to varying Covid-19 lockdowns, tiers and other restrictions. Many businesses have been closed for much of this time, particularly in the arts, entertainment and hospitality sectors.

Even now that most restrictions have been lifted, it can be hard to get back into the mindset of going out again. And yes, we do need to be cautious and bear in mind that the pandemic is not over. But we thought we’d put together a list of ten things that you can now do again, just to motivate and inspire you to have a bit of fun now lockdown is over.

1. Dine in style

You don’t have to spend a fortune to eat out. But whatever you do spend, you will be supporting a business that has had it very tough over the last 18 months. So why not have a think about one or two restaurants that you would really like to visit but haven’t had the opportunity to do so, then make a booking to go sometime soon.

Whether it’s a casual night out or a special celebration, you will have a great time and contribute towards helping the business to get back on its feet again.

2. Live music

The music industry has been hit hard during lockdown but gigs are now running again. So shake off the dust and get along to see some live music! For a big event you can book directly with the venue or through an agency such as Ticketmaster.

But also take a look round your local area to see what smaller events are running. Many pubs and other local venues have regular music nights and would love your support.

3. Theatre

Of course it’s not only live music events that are running again. Most theatres are now open for a wide range of events. Whether you like drama, comedy or musicals there is something just for you. And of course with Christmas approaching it will soon be pantomime season. Oh yes it will!

So check out both the big city theatres within easy reach and also smaller local theatres for a fun post-lockdown night out.

4. Cinema

During lockdown many of us became addicted to Netflix, and several films that would otherwise have premiered in cinemas were streamed direct to Netflix instead. But now cinemas are open it would be good to support them as well.

A few of the many recent and upcoming releases include:

  • No Time to Die – Daniel Craig’s final Bond movie, based in Jamaica.
  • The Many Saints of Newark – Sopranos prequel starring Michael Gandolfini and Alessandro Nivola.
  • Dune – based on Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel. Stars Timothée Chalamet and Denis Villeneuve.
  • Spencer – three days in the life of Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) at Sandringham in the early ‘90s.
  • House of Gucci – Ridley Scott’s latest true-crime offering, starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver.

Also look out for smaller, independent cinemas that offer something different. For example the growing Everyman cinema chain that serves wine and pizza to your seat.

5. Food and drink events

On the subject of food, why not support one of the many food and drinks events across the country this autumn? Whether you are into wine or beer tasting, gin festivals or food festivals there is something out there for you to enjoy.

Check out what is happening locally or use sites such as Visit England, Beer Today and Eventbrite for inspiration.

6. Painting evening

If you fancy trying something completely new, look for events where you can learn something as well as having fun. One example of this is a painting evening.

Various companies run these, and the idea is that you meet in a pub or hall and paint a picture under guided instruction. The price includes the cost of materials and you get to take your painting home at the end. A fun evening either to go to on your own or with friends.

Search for such an event locally or try a popular franchise such as Brush Party.

7. Museum or gallery

If you are interested in art and culture, remember that art galleries and museums are also now open. The perfect outing for a wintry day. Most towns and cities have either a museum or art gallery, or both.

And if you live within reach of London you are spoilt for choice! There are over 20 free museums and galleries that you can visit, including Victoria and Albert Museum, The Science Museum, Natural History Museum, British Museum, and the Tate Modern.

8. Shop till you drop

Online shopping surged during the pandemic. Many so-called non-essential shops were closed for months. But they are now open again and, whilst no-one is denying the convenience of shopping online, it is such a refreshing change to be able to shop in person again.

So if there are things that you need to buy, particularly with Christmas approaching, why not treat yourself to a day out and rediscover the joys of shopping. Have fun and shop till you drop rather than continuing to rely completely on the Internet.

9. Escape room

If you want to have some fun with a small group of people why not try an escape room? This is a group game where you and your friends are set a task and have to find clues, solve puzzles and perform tasks together to succeed in escaping from the room.

If you’re interested in trying an escape room, start by searching for general escape rooms in your area. There are also themed escape rooms available: try Hidden City for some exciting games based in London, or Know Escape for a Patient Zero game at various locations across the UK.

10. Love to dance?

Strictly is now back on our screens again and many people are feeling inspired to put on their own dancing shoes. The good news is that there are now many options available if you love to dance.

Check out local halls, sports centres and gyms to see if they have dance events running, either dancing lessons or evenings where you can just turn up to join in the dance of your choice – for example Ceroc or Modern Jive.

Nightclubs are now open again, so if that is the environment you prefer why not plan a great night out with some friends.
